PRADA SPRING/SUMMER 2017 WOMEN’S COLLECTION / MILAN FASHION WEEK

Prada  –  One of the most acclaimed women of the fashion industry, Miuccia Prada is always on the front line when it comes to surprising her customers with unconventional clothing choices, and her newest Prada SS 2017 collection skillfully reminds us of this fact.

With colors and silhouettes that directly draw inspiration from Prada’s tailoring techniques exercised in the past, the collection is all about exuberance and coziness combined. Its style could be placed somehow in-between streetwear and conceptual.

Miuccia Prada browsed through Prada’s activewear proposals from the late Nineties to find something that could be as fashionable and comfortable as ever, with the pure intention of designing the coziest, travel-approved pieces of all time.

Although being inevitably luxe and at times even subtly opulent, Prada’s SS 2017 collection takes the whole ‘trans-seasonal holiday’ concept literally, making sure its cosmopolitan customers have something to wear on any rainy day in Dublin, windy night in Copenhagen or even sunny day in Milan.

No wonder why the collection’s key pieces are the colored parkas and windbreakers, oversized kimono jackets and utilitarian accessories, such as roomy backpacks and tote bags, which are the icing on the cake indeed. What’s even more interesting, however, is Miuccia’s choice of packing everything with a slightly sheer, voluminous nylon sort of fabric, which surprisingly creates an intriguing contrast with the label’s signature velvet, silk and cashmere materials.
The line-up’s bold color palette may leave many speechless too, as we rarely have the chance to see such a vibrant, shocking and rich choice of colors from Miuccia Prada’s collections.

Pink, acid green, lilac and orange got blissfully matched with sleek total-black looks, making these unique, vibrant tones stand out even more while also lessening the distances between haute couture and travel-wear thanks to the dramatic A-lines.

Minuscule details, such as tiny belts cinched at the waists, function both as a utilitarian way of attaching bags to the models’ body, and as quirky, innovative details to shape up and reinvent the collection’s windbreakers, letting them live a double life as activewear by day and futuristic staples by night.

Miuccia Prada then managed to re-create such a double life for the label’s notorious tracksuit, refinishing it not only with a similar synthetic fabric, but also with contrasting patterns on the sides. These patterns not only look dynamic and edgy, but will surely help you look more visible during the nights while riding a bike in a foreign country.

Riffled hems and patchwork motifs are the key details that keep on denoting the entire collection’s struggle to combine high fashion with activewear pieces.

We could fairly state that Miuccia created a new, parallel world, where fashion naturally veers off from one style to another, without following any specific rule, but rather solely focusing on instinct and passion.

Miuccia Prada decided to display a certain level of restraint while not losing her personal style.

Prada : “Instead of exploring the history of women, which I have for a while, I decided to take care of now, the present, and trying to find elegance.”

In doing so, Prada is essentially refounding the basis to her brand; it was a throwback to the beginning days of the brand but also a reconfigured approach to the modern way of thinking.

There was plenty of ’90s style thrown in without dwelling in the past, and there were also several throwbacks to ’20s/’30s fashion, as has been the penchant of the luxury fashion brand over the years…

Do you like it?
